Fronteiras Filmes is an independent film & video production company based in the Bay Area. After working together for several years across multiple non-fiction projects at a San Francisco documentary studio, our creative team was formed with the goal of bringing a fresh look to the new generation of local filmmakers with the focus on immigrant narratives.
We are working class filmmakers living in the Bay Area. We believe in cinema as an agent for social change, so most of our projects include impact strategies designed to take direct action with the making and screening of a film project.
FRONTEIRAS TEAM
João da Rocha
Director, Producer & Cinematographer
Originally from Brazil, João Vieira moved to the U.S. to pursue his B.F.A. in visual media arts at Emerson College. Leaving the comfort of his homeland was the hardest thing he has ever done. Vieira values the personal growth he undertook as an immigrant as necessary to understand himself as an artist and to forge an independent future. He creates self-reflective investigations using experimental analog photography and filmmaking to explore concepts of homes, family and language.
Joey Horan
Director, Producer & Editor
Joey Horan is a documentary filmmaker and journalist. He is originally from Rhode Island and has lived and worked in the Great Lakes, North Carolina, Northern California, and Brazil. His work has focused on the environment, displacement, and infrastructure. He holds a Master of Journalism from the UC Berkeley School of Journalism and currently works as a co-producer and Associate Editor at Actual Films.
Tony Mitchell
Producer & Writer
Tony Mitchell is a writer and filmmaker born in the Bay Area. He spent most of his childhood in San Diego before moving to LA to attend Cal State LA’s film program and obtained a BA in TV & Film Studies with a concentration in screenwriting. After graduating from college he worked in the development department at Mandalay Pictures before transitioning to network TV and working in the writer’s office for shows such as 90210, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, and Once Upon a Time. After relocating back to the Bay Area in 2020, Tony found his way to the documentary world and worked at Actual Films on feature length non fiction projects.
